The scariest Halloween costume for 2009...

If you are looking for the scariest costume idea for 2009, you should dress as Jon and Kate from the reality show train-wreck "Jon and Kate Plus Eight". It's sure to make people scream! They might be screaming things like "Just shut up", "You ruined television", "Our country will never be the same", "Those eight children really have no hope", etc. but they will most definitely scream.
All you need is some Ed Hardy clothes to be Jon, and an animal on your head to play Kate:
Jon Gosselin is the number one reason to never wear Ed Hardy (Pictured here with clothing line founder, Christian Audigier)

Kate is the number one reason to never get your hair cut like this.
No wait, actually the haircut is. It's just scary.
The Kate Gosselin wig is one of the top selling wigs of this season.
Don't Get Sold Out!

Here are some examples of celebrities dressing up as Jon and Kate for Halloween if you still need some inspiration:
Regis and Kelly

Heidi and Spencer

Now that you are all sufficiently scared, have a Happy Halloween!

Little Miss Sunshine to play Little Miss Water...

"Little Miss Sunshine" Oscar nominee, Abigail Breslin will headline the 50th Anniversary revival of "Miracle Worker" on Broadway in the Spring. This will be the 13 year old's Broadway debut but not the first time she realizes what "water" is.

Upon the casting announcement, an instant out-cry was heard from the community of deaf and blind actors. A spokesman said that the producers should have seriously considered a disabled actor first. The producer for the show shot back by saying "I would consider it financially irresponsible to approach a major revival without making a serious effort to get a star." while also saying he would consider a disabled actor for the understudy.

The original production starred Patty Duke who also went on to star in the film (and won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress - 1962). Patty Duke is not deaf or blind, but was pretending to be when she played the role.

But seriously, is the casting of Breslin being blown out of proportion or is the Producer out of line? When a play or movie is about a War Veteran should it actually be played by an actor who fought in a war? When the lead role is supposed to have red hair, is it ethically wrong to have a blond actress in a red wig?

Hmmmmm....

Abigail Breslin doesn't care though... she's going to be on Broadway, ya'll! Here's hoping she does better than this actress...

Spring Awakening does Green Day...

Berkeley Rep is currently premiering the new Green Day musical, "American Idiot". It is directed by Michael Mayer, who also directed "Spring Awakening" on Broadway. It features songs by Green Day and stars John Gallagher Jr. and is arguably the first rock opera to generate buzz since "The Who's Tommy" (counting "RENT" and "Spring Awakening" as contemporary musical theatre). The show features every song from the album "American Idiot" as well as a few tracks from their newest album "21st Century Breakdown". Time said this about the original album:

“A masterpiece…A significant part of American Idiot’s charm is that for an album that bemoans the state of the union, it is irresistibly buoyant. Listen closely, and you will hear a story about Jesus of Suburbia, his dangerous friend St. Jimmy and a heroic girl called Whatsername, who are struggling to express their individuality in a mass-media culture.”

The show follows this basic plot-line in opera form. Of course you can't really say basic about that plot. The few negative aspects of the reviews are about the hard-to-follow story line and lack of narrative (which many felt about "Spring Awakening" as well).

Regardless, how exciting that an edgy punk rock band like Green Day realized theatre is such an important art form! Musicals are constantly evolving with the times, but it takes courageous artists to make it happen...

The musical is currently running to good reviews and getting great audience feedback and a transfer to Broadway and the silver-screen have both been rumored. The show has already doubled it's run once, now playing until Nov. 15th. and after viewing the trailer below, it's not hard to see why. Hopefully it will be playing on a stage or screen near you soon...

My five-year old is stronger than yours...

Five year old Giuliano Stroe from Romania is not only in the Guinness Book of World Records for the fastest ever 10-meter hand-stand walk with a weight ball held between the legs (why is that even a category?), but he can also beat your kid up at the playground. It seems his skinny dad has finally found a way to compensate and is giving a whole new meaning to a second chance on life.

Apparently Father-of-the-Year-Runner-Up Iulian Stroe (he lost to Jon Gosselin) has had his son training in the gym since he was 2 years old! But not to worry, Iulian promised that Giuliano is never allowed to practice by himself. What a huge relief... Giuliano is only allowed to pump iron when his dad is there to make him do an extra set. Otherwise he may slack off.

But seriously, Giuliano's dad makes beauty pageant contestant moms seem normal. Check out the video of some amazing things that this 5 year old can do that you can't. Also consider donating money to the "Protect Giuliano's Class from being beat up by a Freakishly Strong 5 Year Old" Fund...

The X-Factor Twins...

Talentless twins have been making all London smile this season of X-Factor, proving that people love to watch performers who love what they do (despite talent).

It is fascinating to see two guys so happy and so oblivious to the fact that they suck. Their performance of "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin will blow your mind, especially after you hear that they are constantly voted in the top three acts on the show! It's kind of like watching a train wreck. It's horrifying yet transfixing and a little bit delightful because you were there to witness it first hand.

Not to ruin your viewing pleasure, but John and Edward definitely crawl on all fours and make faces as dancers ride them like horses. Doesn't get much better than that...

John and Edward on X-Factor:

The Little Film that could...

A triumph for indie filmmakers everywhere was reached over the weekend as Paranormal Activity opened at number one ahead of Saw VI. The film played less than half the screens of it's horror counterpart and shocked everyone by beating out the franchise giant and taking in 22 million (compared to Saw VI's 14 million). This brings the total revenue for Paranormal to 66 million.

The fascinating part of this whole story is the film's budget was only $11,000!

We are entering a new day of user controlled content and this is beginning to be true even in Hollywood. With the internet, people can communicate very quickly to make their voices heard. The makers of the film relied on that to get their movie a wide release. They started a month ago (end of September) by releasing Paranormal Activity in 13 cities. Then they created an ingenious trailer featuring a live audience's reactions as they viewed the film. The audience was terrified. After the trailer plays there is a link for you to request the movie in your city. The buzz kept building until the film had a guaranteed audience - people that took the time to say "I want to watch it. Please play Paranormal Activity in my city."

What ends up happening in this situation, is people get to see a good movie. The film is just plain scary. It doesn't rely on special effects or a perfectly orchestrated score, it has one camera and two amazing actors. There is no gore in the film at all, with the filmmakers relying on sounds and "what if" moments to scare you. It is, in a sense, an old school scare. Classic suspense, a sort of Rear Window. A scary movie that relies on good story telling and characters to make you scream. What a rare treat. If the film was bad, it would not have received it's wide release as people would have heard it wasn't good and would not have taken the time to request it.

Smaller filmmakers are finding new ways to tell their story. This summer's District 9 is another good example of a brilliant film with a very low budget. It cost 30 million to make the film about aliens and it was full of special effects - proving you don't need hundreds of millions of dollars to make an alien look real.

The more filmmakers can bypass the studio giants, the more we win. That's when WE get to decide what films are good and worth seeing. And as this weekend proved, a little film that cost $11,000 and generated hype based on internet and word-of-mouth can destroy a box-office giant like Saw. Now if only I could raise ten thousand dollars to make a movie...
